"The Hills" ended with a shocking reveal -- Brody Jenner and Kristin Cavallari on a sound stage with backdrops and props -- seemingly saying the entire series was fake. However, former star Lauren Conrad said it wasn't all fake.
"I think the story they told wasn't a dishonest one," Conrad, told Allure via People. "The way they did it sometimes was. They aren't going to be there for everything. Sometimes two of their main characters will get into a fight, and that's important to the storyline. The [producers] need that reenacted."
However, by the time Cavallari became the star of the MTV series, she said it was heavily scripted. "Almost all of it," she told the New York Post. "I think I can say that by now. I guess no one can get mad at me anymore."
Cavallari and Conrad aren't the first stars to admit there was a certain amount of audience involved.
"'The Hills,' I feel in the beginning was very real, very raw," Audrina Patridge said. "But it kind of started transitioning into being guided and manipulated and us kind of coming up with storylines and things."
Real or not, "The Hills" was a ratings player for MTV -- the show's last season pulled in about 2 million viewers an episode -- and launched the careers of many reality stars.
