The Washington Ballet's Nutcracker Will Have Live Music

The Washington Ballet's Nutcracker: Now With Live Music

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Ballet announced on Wednesday that this year's performance of "The Nutcracker" will feature live musicians. Why the big fuss?

For the last two years, budget constraints forced the ballet to perform to recorded music -- in 2010, Washington City Paper had a cover story about laid-off musicians who would have normally performed the classic Christmas-time story inside the Warner Theater.

Adrienne Arsht, a philanthropist and business leader, made a $250,000 gift to the Washington Ballet to bring the live music back this year, for what will be the Washington Ballet's 50th anniversary production of "The Nutcracker."

"The Nutcracker" runs for 30 performances, Dec. 1-24, at the Warner Theatre. Buy tickets online, by phone at 202.397.7328 or at the Warner Theatre Box Office (513 13th St. NW).
