We Are Adam Lanza's Mother, Too: Moms Discuss Children's Violent Behavioral Disorders

Following Friday's tragic school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, and media speculation that the shooter suffered from a developmental disorder, writer Liza Long published a blog post over the weekend about her personal experience raising a son who suffers from mental illness. Long's words were reposted on numerous news sites and the post went viral on Facebook and Twitter.

HuffPost Live hosted a conversation Monday with parents of children with violent behavioral disorders, and heard stories of the difficulties in raising kids who they fear will grow up to hurt others. Samantha Bernstein, Pauline Gaines, and Dr. Ross Green joined host Marc Lamont Hill to share their experiences.

Bernstein said her son Max had been hospitalized eight times in two years by the time he was seven.

"I think every mother or father in this situation has had to physically restrain their child," she said.

Dr. Greene spoke to the corrosive "groupthink" around violent behavioral disorder, stressing instead the opportunities to build "a much more humane, much more compassionate, much more productive take on who these kids are."
