The fiscal policy of Kansas under Governor Sam Brownback - massive tax cuts, in the belief that tax relief for business will “grow the economy” and lead to more overall revenue - is basically the fiscal policy of the mainstream Republican Party going back to Reagan. It’s had its fullest realization in Kansas. It was an utter, complete, unmitigated disaster. It has almost destroyed public education in the state, as well as many other essential services, and called into question the very nature of the social compact. Kansas Republican have now had to undo it. And yet national Republicans - all kinds of Republicans, in government, at policy institutions, in business - are still pushing it. Why?
