Over the past few years the number of working models appears to have quadrupled. Models like Karlie Kloss and Cara Delevingne are landing more high-profile campaigns than ever, and all at the ripe age of 22, while others continue to strut down the runway well into their 40s. It's a glamorous life -- being a supermodel -- but before they were sporting couture and sipping champagne with top designers, they were beginners. With a few polaroids in their books and a pair of heels in their bags, they did their best to navigate the highs and lows of the fashion and beauty business in order to make it big.

Inspired by their successful climbs up the fashion ladder, we spent New York Fashion Week catching up with some of the industry's most prolific catwalkers to get a first-hand account of what it's really like to be a young model working in fashion and the lessons they learned along the way. What do Gigi Hadid, Sara Sampaio, and Malaika Firth wish they knew about modeling when they first started out? Find out in the slideshow below!

"Be true to yourself and make sure that you're always comfortable because that is what's going to make you proud in the end -- knowing that you are comfortable with your accomplishments."

"I wish I didn't take things so personally. My height has been something that people have criticized my whole career, but after a while I learned to not let it get to me because in the end there's nothing I can do about it. You can't let those types of things get to you."

"I wish I knew how much waiting around is involved -- like at castings and photo shoots. I didn't expect there to be so much down time. You get used to it after a while though and then it's nice because it gives you time to catch up with people you haven't seen in a while."
