Nearly 10 percent of U.S. adults struggle with depression, but so many more of us have a hard time understanding the disease. As the TED-Ed video above points out, depression is much harder to see, and thus to understand, than a case of obesity or a broken leg, for example. Depression can overtake a person who looks fine on the outside, but is struggling on the inside.
Some important things to understand about the mental illness: Feeling sad every now and again and having depression are not one and the same. Clinical depression lasts for at least two consecutive weeks, according to psychiatric guidelines, and its symptoms can include poor concentration, low energy or recurrent thoughts of suicide. While we've come a long way in better understanding the condition, we still have a lot of work to do. Getting educated about the condition and quashing its stigma are good places to start.
