Is Bill Gates The Secret Weapon To Fighting Climate Change?

As journalists, we dutifully report on what's going wrong, from scandals and corruption to natural disasters and social problems. But far too often the media fails to show the whole picture, neglecting to tell the stories of what is working. From scientific breakthroughs to successful crime-reduction initiatives, the What’s Working Honor Roll highlights some of the best reporting and analysis, from a range of media outlets, on all the ways people are working toward solutions to some of our greatest challenges.

The financial power of Bill Gates is undeniable. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has helped dramatically lower new cases of polio in India, combat HIV and malaria, and drive global improvement on education and agriculture. Gates has used his resources to make a difference.

The Guardian is now calling on the multi-billionaire to put his power toward fighting climate change.

As part of the news organization's new initiative to combat climate change, Guardian editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger is asking the Gates Foundation to back its campaign by divesting from fossil fuels and investing in companies looking for alternatives to oil, coal and gas.

"If the Gates Foundation were to divest, it would send a powerful signal to fossil fuel companies and to governments that business as usual is not acceptable," Rusbridger wrote. "It would also have a huge snowball effect on other organisations currently considering whether to move their own money. In short it would be real climate leadership."
