Bulgaria usually makes the news headlines in all 50 shades of awful. The country is either among the most toxic places to live, topping-some-country with the worst corruption in politics - the list is endless and it isn’t pleasant.

More often than you would think, however, magic happen in Bulgaria and I’m here to introduce you to not one, but two beautiful miracles to smile your day.

Arthur: the miracle guide dog

Arthur is Milyo’s guide dog for more than 7 years - he’s his eyes and ears. One day the furry fella goes for his usual checkup and gets diagnosed with a heart tumour. The news are devastating to his humans. Arthur is not merely a dog, he’s turned full-rights family member and Milyo and his wife love him unconditionally. Logic says there’s only one possible outcome and while the family prepares for the inevidable, the 4 Paws Foundation (where Arthur was trained as a guide dog) decides to try a little harder.

God smiles at Arthur when Albena (a member of the 4 Paws Foundation) meets Dr. Ranko Georgiev (a veterinarian cardiologist from the Central Veterinary Clinic in Sofia) and Dr. Georgi Ignatov (cardio surgeon from City Clinic). According to her words they take Arthur’s case as a personal cause and for the first time in the world perform an open heart surgery to a dog. Something at which doctors and surgeons from Tokyo, London, and Colorado have failed.

The procedure is similar to a bypass surgery and lasts a total of 6 hours. The heart is connected to a machine for cardiopulmonary bypass for nearly 2 hours and is stopped for 20 minutes.

The surgery is an absolute success! Today Arthur is back with his family and he’s recovering well. Woof woof dear Arthur! We’re so happy for you!

The bionic kitten with the purr-fect legs!

It’s a common belief that innovation doesn’t happen outside the Western countries. Yet, it’s an incredibly awesome surprise when young, forward-thinking Bulgarians leave the cliché for the well-being of someone (or something) else.

In this situation we’re talking about Pooh: a stray kitten which didn’t see much good from humans until life met him with veterinary surgeon Vladislav Zlatinov. Check out this video:
