When Politics, Policy and Public Opinion Prevail

In 1993, a majority of Americans opposed allowing homosexuals to serve in the military. Nearly twenty years later, more than three in four support allowing gay soldiers to openly serve. It's not often that we get to see the evolution of opinion reflected not only in the political discourse, but in the reversal of policy that reflects the public will.

In an era when cynicism of government is dominant, it is refreshing to see the "right" policy reflect the desire of the American people. And in a time when all Americans should be grateful for those who wear the uniform of our armed forces, it's a pleasure to extend that gratitude to all of those who are brave and committed enough to serve our country, regardless of their sexual orientation.
