White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Monday the Obama administration currently doesn't have a position on Arizona's SB 1062, which would allow businesses to refuse to serve same-sex couples on "religious freedom" grounds.
When asked for comment Monday at the daily briefing with reporters, Carney said only that he hasn't discussed the Arizona bill with the president.
"I don't have an official position," Carney said. "It certainly doesn't sound particularly tolerant, but I don't have a position at this time on it."
The White House may not yet have a position, but Arizona's congressional delegation is speaking out. Both of the state's two Republican U.S. senators, plus four Democratic representatives, have all said they oppose the bill. Even one of the Republican state senators who voted for the legislation now says he regrets it and is urging a veto.
The Arizona state legislature passed SB 1062 last week, and it now awaits action by Gov. Jan Brewer (R), who has not yet indicated whether she plans to sign it.
“You know, the bill is in transmittal, and I don’t have to make a decision until next Friday, so I’ve got plenty of time,” Brewer said Sunday at the National Governors Association meeting.
