On June 19, some lucky whale watchers caught a rare glimpse of this magnificent creature along the Green Cape in New South Wales, Australia. Though the ghostly whale is hardly ever spotted, this is the third year in a row it has been seen.
The all-white, albino humpback whale, affectionately nicknamed "Migaloo," was first seen in 1991 when he was about 3 to 5 years old, and was thought to be the only one of his kind. Today Migaloo is probably 26 to 28 years old, and researchers now know he is actually one albino humpback whale out of a handful.
Smithsonian states three other similar whales have been documented so far: Migaloo Junior, Willow and Bahloo.
Oskar Peterson a researcher at the White Whale Research Center told CNN there is photographic proof of a 100 percent white whale [Willow] in Norway. "Migaloo isn't quite as unique as we once thought," says Peterson.
Humpback whales have incredible endurance and migrate thousands of miles at about 3 to 9 mph. According to CNN, Migaloo is making his annual migration from the Antarctic to breeding grounds along the Great Barrier Reef.
