Why Be Credible When You Can Be Incredible? <br> 06 Parade

Before I try to explain this song in written-form, watch the "pink elephants" scene from Dumbo. Turn off the sound on the video and press play on "Parade".

06: Parade

Before I try to explain this song in written-form, watch the "pink elephants" scene from Dumbo. Turn off the sound on the video and press play on "Parade". Pay attention. The animated marching and the song are in sync. We watched this 900 times (give or take) in the studio. "Parade" is about a headspace. An altered one.

Providing a soundtrack to a room full of people while sober is one of the loneliest feelings. I can't really explain why, but here's a graph I made to help you understand the scientific correlation between DJing and sobriety:

Have you ever worked retail? I used to! And it's way more fun than DJing sober. As a direct result of this discovery, there were many inebriated evenings during my tenure as a Greater Rochester Area DJ. This continued through most of the How Do You Feel Now? sessions. Most Thursday nights, Sean and I could be found in the DJ booth at Bug Jar in Rochester. Most Friday afternoons, we could be found waking up on air mattresses with headaches as the sun went down.

We wanted to document the feeling, sounds, and mood of those late nights on the record. It had to be a song that we would want to drop onto our skeuomorphic iPad turntables late in the evening, but also convey a certain amount of desperation lyrically. It's a sonic onslaught. It's belligerent. It's how my brain feels 10 minutes before the bar closes. Food? Is anyone up for food? Mark's? This song shares a some DNA with "Destruction". There's a little bit of antagonism to it.

Musical Notes:

  • This track was very challenging mix-wise. So much is happening, it's really hard to make it all audible. There are samples from vacuum cleaners and a bunch of other things recorded on my phone and thrown into Kontakt.

  • Neal Pogue did a few mixes of this song, but eventually Andy Wallace did the version that appears on the record.
  • The drums were tracked at Premier Studios in New York during the same sessions as "Now" and "Somebody New".
  • A friend of mine recently said that this song felt like a cross between Korn and Nsync. I believe him.
  • The bridge originally contained a sample from Dumbo, but we couldn't get it cleared. You'll have to watch the YouTube clip above and use your imagination.
