In an age where kids are glued to smartphones and tablets for entertainment, it is the duty of parents to introduce the old charm of board games to them. Board games are of various types and are quite beneficial for the physical and mental health of kids. As a parent, when you play board games with your kids, you get to spend a lot of time with them and teach them the importance of bonding together as a family. Apart from these, board games are beneficial for kids in the following ways as well:

1. Following rules

One of the most important lessons that kids learn from board games is to follow the rules. They get to understand that every game has a different set of rules and that it needs the patience to get a feel of them. Rules develop a sense of discipline and orderliness in kids, and they can employ these lessons in their studies and other activities as well for their overall personality development.

2. Proactive thinking

While playing board games, kids are encouraged to think proactively as they are trained to anticipate the moves of the other players. This helps them to plan their life very well and be circumspective of situations around them. This also helps kids to predict the moves of their peers and competitors at school, at competitions and other events so that they can plan their next moves accordingly.

3. Looking at failure at stepping stones

When you play board games with your kids, you get an opportunity to teach them that it is alright to lose in life sometimes. This lesson will stay with kids forever. They will start viewing failure as stepping stones to their success. Instead of crying over spilt milk, kids will learn not to repeat their mistakes so that they can proceed further in the game. These games will teach your kids to lose gracefully and take in pride in the experiences gained from these failures.

4. Concentration & Mental strength

Kids who are introduced to board games at an early age can focus better in their activities. This is because board games teach them to be mentally active and concentrate at the task in hand with utmost seriousness. They think of practical solutions for all kinds of problems in life because they assess all the factors in hand and take the fine solution by keeping the big picture in mind always.

5. Physical health

Today, we see kids suffering from problems like obesity and chronic pain in their bones because of lack of physical activities. Televisions and smartphones have crippled a child’s ability to think clearly today. Therefore, it is important for them to have an active mind if they want their physical health to be in top condition. Playing board games keep kids away from stress and problems like cholesterol and low blood pressure. These games increase the release of endorphins in one’s body, which leads to overall physical and mental relaxation.

6. Working as a team

When kids are included in team boarding games, they learn to work in tandem with each other right from a young age. They know to realise the value of each and every member of their team and play carefully after taking their strengths and weaknesses into account. A good team player will grow up to be very successful because he will eventually become a good leader as well.

Important points to remember

From the points mentioned above, it is evident that board games play a big role in the overall personality development of kids. However, you can get the full benefits of these games only when you choose them properly. Most of the games have the time limit mentioned on their boxes. You don’t have to pay too much of attention to this fact because you can customise them as per your kid’s attention span. If your kid is anywhere between four and seven years old, consider buying more of English, Math, colouring and identification cards. This will improve the eye-hand coordination and motor skills of your kid tremendously. When you follow these board games for kids tips, you can be sure of choosing the right games that your kids will enjoy.
