Why Donald Trump is a Positional Leader

I think we can all agree Donald Trump is not influencing change in the right manner. Particularly the change he is lobbying for. His approach is destructive and he's hurting people in the process.

The way I see it, "The Don" is a positional leader, meaning, he can only lead as a result of his position. According to John Maxwell, he states a positional leader as the lowest level of leadership -- the entry level. Mr. Maxwell goes on to say, "The only influence a positional leader has is that which comes with the job title. People follow because they have to. Positional leadership is based on the rights granted by the position and title. Nothing is wrong with having a leadership position. Everything is wrong with using position to get people to follow. Position is a poor substitute for influence."

I think we can all agree Donald Trump is not influencing change in the right manner. Particularly the change he is lobbying for. His approach is destructive and he's hurting people in the process. Great leaders are empathetic, compassionate and understanding. They listen to understand before trying to be understood, and they don't push you away or stifle dialogue when another has something important to contribute to the discussion (just watch Mr. Trump's body language. He uses stopping motions and touching to physically control the conversation with his interviewers and opponents). Good leaders use bodily gestures that reflect a sense of openness and calm. They don't push you away but rather embrace what you have say.

As much as Donald is leading the Republican polls and receiving an overwhelming amount of media attention; he will always be a positional leader. You can't earn the presidency by being positional. Going back to John Maxwell's "5 Levels of Leadership", I personally believe to be president you must be a "Pinnacle" leader: "One who creates opportunities that other leaders don't. They create legacy in what they do. People follow them because of who they are and what they represent. In other words, their leadership gains a positive reputation."

That's what this country needs. Pinnacle leaders who will transcend our country and the position of the Presidency through compassion and respect. Donald Trump cannot sustain the trajectory he is on and expect to win the Presidency by using cold-hearted, manipulative actions like a school yard bully.
