Why Now Is The Time To Fight

Trump is careless in the worst sense of that word -- a man without care, a man who cares for no-one but himself and his own, a man who lies as easily as he breathes.

Say you had a child -- if not a child a dog or a cat or an elderly parent -- would you turn that child, that parent, that animal over to the care of a predator for the next four years without protest? Even if that predator was rich, and had millions of followers who had supported his career and were blind to his faults? That is exactly how I see the Presidency of Donald Trump -- that of a predatory man without conscience or moral intellect -- someone whom I would not trust to walk my beloved dog let alone run the country I live in and protect the friends who warm my life and the family I love. He has show all he plans to do in these weeks prior to his Presidency, and there is no need to wait for this cake to bake.

Trump is careless in the worst sense of that word -- a man without care, a man who cares for no-one but himself and his own, a man who lies as easily as he breathes, and who blunders about like the giant in Jack and the Beanstalk guarding his gold, stomping on all the "little people" in his path. Do not delude yourself. It is not only Muslims and Mexicans who will suffer from his Presidency, not only the poorest of the poor who will find themselves homeless and starving, (yes -- remove food stamps and starvation will occur) but all of us who are fortunate enough to live in modest comfort will never know who is knocking on our door -- who has decided that we are "the enemy" and must be confined to some camp. When such a man has reached power it is an illusion to believe that he will peacefully give up that power in four years.

All four of the freedoms that Roosevelt articulated are endangered by this man -- starting with the freedom to have an opinion in opposition to his own. Add the freedom to worship as one chooses, to love as one chooses, and to live as one chooses -- it is ironic, even silly, but all our freedoms can now be tweeted out of existence. He does not need an executive order -- all he needs is a tweet to set the agenda for the next four years, and set evil in motion. The GOP has prepared the way for him with it's thinly described racist legislation, it's voter suppression through redistricting, they have laid down the red carpet, and now the emperor has arrived to rule. They believe they can control him. Have you ever tried to control a four year old who is having a temper tantrum in a toy store? We are about to have government by tantrum -- thank you Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell.

I do not laugh at a soon-to-be President who is offended by satire on SNL -- I hear the thought police getting ready to harm those who dare to make fun of his oh so glaring flaws. The press who is merely willing to report on his actions without commenting upon them and excoriating them is a collaborator in the ruination of this country. The bigots and fools who are now part of this king's court are not there by chance -- they arrived because they saw in him what all the decent men and women despise -- an opportunity to impose their will and their hate upon others. Decency is often unprotected -- it depends upon a courageous civil society for its safety, and when that society hides from the reality of the world it offers the Bannons of our world, the Kellyannes who collaborate in the destruction of our democracy, the opportunity to impose their will on those unable to protect themselves. Trump must face four years of steady, unremitting, courageous opposition. Sadly, not to oppose evil is to support evil.
