Why Is Brody Jenner Famous? Reality TV Staple Joins Cast Of 'Keeping Up With The Kardashians'

Why Is Brody Jenner Famous?

The Kardashians get a lot of flak from people who claim they are "famous for being famous." But with nary a sex tape to his name, it's their newest cast member and stepbrother, Brody Jenner, who truly embodies the concept of "famous for being famous."

On Monday, the E! Network announced that the 29-year-old would join the cast of "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" for its eighth season. "I'm looking forward to the upcoming season and getting to know my extended family a little better," Jenner told E! News of his new gig.

His decision to join the cast isn't that surprising, given that he hasn't been doing a lot of anything with his life -- except appearing on reality shows. Long before the world even knew the Kardashian name in context with reality TV, Jenner created, produced and starred on the short-lived 2005 reality series "The Princes of Malibu," alongside his brother Brandon Jenner; their mother, former Miss Tennessee USA Linda Thompson; and their pal Spencer Pratt. The show, which highlighted their luxurious lifestyle and tension with their stepfather, David Foster, due to their freeloading ways, was such a flop that Fox aired only two of the six episodes produced.

Jenner would get another chance at reality TV two years later when he was heavily featured on MTV's "The Hills," first credited as Pratt's friend. He then dated the show's star Lauren Conrad, and later dated Kristin Cavallari. In 2009, Jenner managed to score the spinoff series "Bromance," which followed the Los Angeles socialite as he searched for a new best friend after his fallout with Pratt, but like his first attempt at the genre, it lasted only one season.

In addition to appearing on various episodes of his step-siblings' shows, Jenner has kept himself in the public eye through his romantic life. In addition to his televised relationships with Conrad and Cavallari, Jenner also dated Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Haylie Duff, Playboy Playmate of the Year Jayde Nicole and Canadian singer Avril Lavigne, whom he broke up with in January 2012.

Sources told Us Weekly that the breakup was in part due to Lavigne's distaste for reality TV. "He hasn't worked and he wants to. They were both unhappy because he wants to have his career, she wants him to stay with her," an insider revealed, adding that Lavigne had vetoed multiple TV show offers he had previously received.

More than a year after their breakup, Lavigne has moved on and is engaged to Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, while Jenner seems to be getting his wish and will be back on the small screen, and getting paid for simply living his life.
