This is the (embarassing) story of my first online course.

I discovered few platforms such as Teachable & Thinkific & read several great things about them.

People seem to be selling courses on topics covering everything in the world, from knitting to photography and from fitness to business.

I knew perfectly what my wheel house was- Innovation in Business & Training.

I decided it was time to purchase a new laptop for all the techie stuff (as my old one would shut down every 10 minutes of Powerpoint-ing).

I spent about a month honing down all my ideas, preparing exclusive content, chosing great royalty free images, audios, backgrounds, recording voice overs, sending them over to freelancers for technical help and finally I uploaded it.

I posted about it on my blog and few Social Media pages and waited...

and waited...

and waited...

Not a single sale!

Crickets... actually not even crickets, nothing, nada, niente...

Facebook ads didn’t help. Neither did improving the content.

In the next few weeks, I realized the reasons behind my failure and the lessons learnt. There could be a ton of reasons behing why your courses may not be selling but the MOST IMPORTANT TRUTH I REALIZED after this incident was this:

Creating an online course is not the same as selling it.

Just because you are a master of your craft does not automatically mean you will be able to sell it.

Selling requires a different set of skills, tools and techniques.

I will talk about the specific skills in another post but today I want to cover the PROCESS because this is what I got wrong (and now that I’m a professional online course reviewer,) so do most others.

For the sake of understanding, you need to think of this process similar to that of a FROZEN PIZZA!

Yes, I said frozen pizza.

In the infographic, I explain the similarities in the process in a very easy and simple to apply methods. It couldn’t get any simpler than this.

But don’t mistake simple for easy or common.

I have not seen any other person in this arena talk about the process in this way. That is because it requires #hustle. Most people out there want you to buy their 3 step course creation formulae or 5 day mastermind, without actually revealing that course creation is just 1/3rd of the job. There are two other parts- packaging and selling.

Please remember that this is only about the SELLING PROCESS not about creating content. And bear in mind that this process works when your content is good.

If your content sucks no selling process can bring you great results.
