In the last few months I have experienced and I am continuing to experience some of the worst physical and mental pain of my life. I wanted to share with you what I have been learning from that pain and how you could benefit and learn from the pains in your life too. Believe me, if you allow yourself to be open to your pain and take the time to look at it, you will uncover some powerful gems.

I have been working intently on resolving a lower back disc bulge that was causing numbness and pain in my right leg. I recruited an incredible integrative physician and chiropractor who has been able to help get me 80% of the way so far and it looks like we’re on the home straight now. During this healing period, the pain that I have experienced both in my body and in my mind have been quite difficult to deal with. At one point, I didn’t know if I could handle it anymore and I was willing to consider surgery. For those who know me well, that is not something I would generally think about doing but I pushed on and I am grateful I did because I have learnt so much.

Pain is the bodies way of letting you know that something isn’t working the way it’s supposed to. It’s an alarm bell in order to create awareness of a problem. In my professional experience, I have seen so many patients and clients dismiss their pain, avoid it, pretend it’s not there and push it aside in the pursuit of pleasure. Human beings, generally speaking, have been conditioned to avoid pain and discomfort and will do whatever they can to reject it or resist. This, inevitably, only creates more of it to deal with.

Anything you choose to avoid in your life, due to fear, you will just manifest, create or become yourself.

So, it’s worth embracing the pain we’re faced with so we don’t have to deal with versions of it that we’d never choose if given the option.

The most powerful lesson I learnt is this: the quicker I pull off that band aid, the quicker the pain can subside. It is hard, confronting, sometimes scary and overwhelming to face up to what’s led you to where you are and how you’re feeling. The truth is, you and I are creators of our own comfort and discomfort. No one else is actually responsible for that but to admit to that and own up to that is a humbling and very challenging thing to do. You can create an opportunity for huge growth and expansion in your life by taking that accountability. You can let go of your ego’s dominance over your actions and decisions and start listening more carefully to that intuitive voice inside, giving you clear and sound guidance.

If I was going to give you any advice, it would be this: run towards your pain, face it, look it right in the eyes, embrace it and master it. Your pain can teach you everything you need to know to transform your life, create what you want and ultimately lead you to a place of fulfilment and inspiration. In truth, you will achieve so much more in a shorter time frame if you choose this option. Take it from me.
