Driver Faces Charges After Woman Dies Vomiting Out Car Window

Police in Northern Indiana say that a combination of drunken driving and unfortunate circumstances killed a Mishawaka woman early Sunday morning.

Although the woman has yet to be officially identified, family members told WSBT that Amanda Ezra, 24, died in a freak car accident over the weekend. She was with four other people on their way back from a party when she began to feel ill.

Witnesses said and authorities confirmed that the mother of three was riding on a passenger's lap while vomiting out the window of the moving minivan when a her head struck a telephone pole, according to ABC 57.

Ezra died from her injuries, and police said the passenger and the driver of the minivan fled the scene. Police caught up with them and arrested the driver on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, resulting in serious bodily injury and leaving the scene of an accident.

Friends and family were shocked to learn of Ezra's death. They said she had just enrolled in college and hoped to become a teacher.

“Right now I’m kind of in shock," Bianca Temple, who has known Ezra since age 14, told ABC 57. “We’ve been through a lot of stuff together. We were both pregnant together at the same time."

Temple said that although the circumstances of the accident were tragic, she knew Ezra to be a generally responsible person.

"She handled things like an adult. It's not like she went out and... got trashed all the time," Temple told the station.
