A woman leaving a Pompano Beach hospital was struck and killed by a Broward Sheriff's Office patrol car early Wednesday morning.

BSO spokeswoman Dani Moschella said the woman and a man were crossing Federal Highway outside Broward Health Imperial Point around 3 a.m. when the on-duty deputy collided with the woman in his patrol car.

The woman, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at North Broward Health a short time later.

Her boyfriend of five years, John Adams, told NBC6 the couple had gone to the emergency room after she complained of chest pains. They were reportedly crossing the street to go to a 7-11 store in the area when she was struck.

"I heard the hit and I seen her flying in the air and she landed on her head, and she wasn't breathing," Adams said. "I tried to help her.I tried to give her CPR. I was trying to bring her back to life."

The patrol car did not have its siren on or lights flashing at the time of the accident, Adams told CBS Miami.

"He never tried to turn around or swerve around her or nothing," Adams said, according to Local 10. "He just ran straight over her."

Moschella told NBC 6 the deputy would return to work "unless he or his supervisor determine that's not appropriate for some reason."
