Celebrate World Vegan Day (And My Birthday!)

Whether you are vegan or not, many of you care about animals, care about your health and/or care about the environment. Today, in honor of World Vegan Day, I want to encourage you to take your passion for one or all of those things and do something about it.

Some may call it fate, some serendipity, and others just coincidence. Either way, today is both World Vegan Day as well as my birthday. Therefore, today is my favorite day of the year (besides Earth Day, of course!) because I get to celebrate my birth as well as something I'm very passionate about -- veganism.

Whether you are vegan or not, many of you care about animals, care about your health and/or care about the environment. Today, in honor of World Vegan Day, I want to encourage you to take your passion for one or all of those things and do something about it. Attach an act to your thoughts in order to better yourself, society and the world.

Below are just a few acts you can do today. If you're feeling inspired, do more than one. If you're feeling even more inspired than that, see how many you can do throughout the month. For all of the strangers reading this, do an act for the things you care about. For all of my friends and family, do an act for my birthday present.

Don't eat meat today.
Just for one day, eliminate all animal products from your diet.

Bake vegan cookies.
Or brownies. Or pie. Or cupcakes. Just substitute eggs for bananas or applesauce!

Eat a fruit or vegetable you've never tried before.
May I suggest fig, cherimoya, romanesco or sunchoke?

Spend an extra 30 minutes loving your pet.
Whether it's petting, playing or just lounging around, take a half an hour extra out of your day to show your pet(s) that you love them.

Adopt an animal from a shelter.
If you don't have a furry companion, the best place to take one in is from an animal shelter. Then you can go back to the act before this, spend 30 minutes loving that pet and you've conquered two kind vegan acts for the day!

Donate the fur and leather in your closet.
If it's too much to give it all away, maybe just donate a piece or two. If that's even too much of a commitment just don't wear clothing made from animals today!

Pick up a book.
Whether it's informative or just for recipes, vegan books are bountiful.

Watch a documentary.
Not much of a reader? Turn on the tube! Documentaries on going vegan and why it's important for your health and the environment are also plentiful.
