* * * * * FROM 1ST PLACE WINNER:

“First of all, I would like to congratulate all the winners. I was delighted to take part in this competition and get the first prize.

“My name is Michael Karpiński. I was born in 1998 in Lublin, Poland. I’ve always liked to draw and perform all types of handicraft work. In the kindergarten, I used to spend more time on such activities than my peers. It was a kind of fun that really suited my personality and my stay in primary school was no exception. I was quite secretive, insecure and I did prefer staying at home, having a fine snack and drawing to playing outside with friends. And yes, I was plump, though people considered as more talented than “wieght gifted”. Real changes happened two years after graduating from the primary school. I was drawing a lot, usually at the expense of my regular classes at school or social life. I started taking part in provincial and even all-Polish competitions with good results but, simultaneously, with thoughts that that was not enough. In high school I noticed that drawing could involve not only a huge pleasure but also a pleasant future, when I wouldn’t be forced to work by anyone. It was then that I started to attend to my first school of art - the Lublin Institute of Architecture and Art. There, I learnt a lot about composition and structure as well as spatial perception and how to master drawings based on observation and imagination. Passing university entrance exams really well, I’ve decided to come back to competitions; this time, however, to more prestigious (international) ones. I’m very pleased to say that they’ve turned out to be really successful.

“When I was growing up, I wasn’t surrounded by artists. Actually, there was nobody who I could ‘bequeath’ some talent to me or who could teach me anything. Is that good? Well, both my acquaintances who deal with art and I believe that even very good because circumstances as such have allowed me to develop my personal style.

“If I were to describe my style, I would say that I’m an admirer of aesthetics and beauty. When something is beautiful – we simply feel that and nobody has to convince us that this is the case. No personal names or art galleries are necessary.

“By pondering upon my not that distant past, I have to admit that I’m really lucky because I’ve never really expected money or admiration for my works. The only thing that I’ve always wanted to achieve was to create something better next time; the highest prize has always been a satisfaction derived from finishing a drawing and a kind of swirl of senses that propels me into beginning a new work.

“The most important thing that I’ve learnt and now understand is that doing something for yourself is nice but sharing that with others is twice that nice. As simple as that.

Thank you.”

Michael Karpinski, Karpsky
