Americans Are Some Of The World's Best Tippers, According To TripAdvisor Survey

Who Are The World's Best Tippers?

Americans may be some of the world's worst tourists, but according to a new survey, at least that reputation hasn't been earned for skimping on the bill.

The survey, conducted by TripAdvisor, found that 57 percent of Americans always tip while traveling abroad, placing them second only to Germans, who tip at a rate of 69 percent.

TripAdvisor's results are based on a survey of more than 9,000 travelers from eight different countries around the world: Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, England, and the United States. Of the eight countries, respondents who self-identified as "always tipping" ranged from a high of 69 percent (Germans) to a surprising low of 23 percent (Italians).

Only 16 percent of American respondents indicated they felt informed about tipping etiquette while traveling abroad. Because tipping is nearly universal in the U.S., that confusion may explain why so many Americans are likely to simply continue to tip when they're in another country.

"Tipping is a cultural norm in the states, and U.S. travelers have a tendency to take their customs on the road whether they are on American soil or traveling abroad," said Brooke Ferencsik, the director of communications at TripAdvisor, in a release.

When it comes to who gets that tip money from American travelers abroad, additional statistics provided by TripAdvisor to The Huffington Post offered some insight. Of Americans who tip hotel staff, 78% tip the maid, 76% tip room service, 75% tip the bartender, 75% tip the bellman, and 48% tip the valet.
