Family members who take on the around-the-clock role of caring for injured loved ones after they return from war are the conflicts' unsung heroes. They leave their jobs behind to tend to the constant medical and psychological needs of our wounded warriors without getting much compensation, or recognition, in return.
But the PenFed Foundation aims to elevate these caretakers to the spotlight they deserve by giving out the "Hero at Home" award.
Through April 12, family members, caregivers, veterans, or anyone who has met a particularly inspiring and devoted caregiver can upload a one- to two-minute video sharing why that person deserves to win the "Hero at Home" award. The winner will receive a $1,500 American Express gift card and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. The chosen caregiver will also receive the award at the PenFed Foundation's Eighth Annual Night of Heroes Gala on May 24.
"Too often we forget the courage and sacrifice of family members and friends who help our wounded service members and veterans," Kate Kohler, chief operating officer of the PenFed Foundation and a former U.S. Army captain, said in a statement. "We hope that by encouraging caregivers of our military to share their stories on YouTube, more Americans will recognize their contributions."
