Love, joy and compassion.

One day after Valentine’s Day seems appropriate to think about some of our basic human needs, not what it takes to keep our bodies alive, but what it takes to keep our hearts and our souls alive and thriving.

We yearn to be loved, to search out joy and in our heart-of-hearts to show compassion for one another and for ourselves. No one is perfect, but as human spirits we are all the same, all seven billion of us making our way on this earth. We all yearn to be accepted for who we are, but we live in fear that if people really knew us – what dreams we had or what our faults are – they wouldn’t love us. Couldn’t be further from the truth, for when we show our humanity and our humility we give others permission to be human. If everyone revealed their true selves, what their desires, hopes, dreams, fears and failures are we would learn so much about each other, we couldn’t help but feel compassion, which leads to love and ultimately true joy.

But we all get distracted and we forget what our core being needs, what our core purpose is and what we desire in our life – for at its core life is about love. We no doubt need love to survive, science has proven it, but we get caught up in our wants instead of our needs so we move away from love, we forget to show compassion, instead we judge, or worse we shun… when in fact we are all exactly the same, as human beings. To think you are different, that you are more special, or that someone is more special than you is to completely ignore the fact we are all fellow humans – living through the journey of life, for which there is no final destination, except death.

I’ve heard it said the ultimate source of happiness is a healthy body and a warm heart. But even if the body cannot be healthy, for reasons beyond your control, it is still possible to find the joy in your heart. In the Book of Joy, the Dalai Lama puts it this way: “Everbody wants a happy life – and our individual happiness depends on a happy humanity. So we have to think about humanity, discover a sense of oneness of all seven billion human beings. We need unbiased love toward entire humanity, entire sentient beings, irrespective of what their attitude is toward us.”

Words to consider. A time, now more than ever to remember we are all the same. Different in our talents and gifts, but the same as humans. We all must breathe air to live, eat to survive and give and feel love, or die. All something to think about.

It all emanates from our hearts. The light we give is the one which is received in return. Just before writing this blog this morning I heard a song which I had not heard in many years… but seemed fitting as I thought about the words to share today – a song by Neil Diamond, called Heartlight.

Turn on your heartlight, let it shine wherever you go.Let it make a happy glow, for all the world to see.

Until next time thanks for taking the time,
