Given the wealth of information available to us on the web today, it can sometimes be overwhelming when doing research, whatever the subject is. One that comes to mind is what to look for when traveling -- particularly when it comes to which country. It's also difficult to really gauge what is accurate or misleading.
Of course, there is the 'old fashioned' way, if I can call it that, of buying travel guides from well established companies such as Lonely Planet, or individual authors like Rick Steves (if your destination falls in Europe). However, the reality is that travel guides, although accurate, can become outdated. Even though I believe that they are still the correct method of doing proper research, the web is a free way of finding information. That said, it's important to make sure what you read is factually correct.
While the well-known phrase of 'the world is your oyster' is pretty apt when it comes to traveling, the focus of this piece is Greece, a country rich in history and culture. It is known worldwide as the birthplace of democracy, western philosophy, the Olympic Games... the list goes on.
Two friends, Konstantinos Hatoupis and Adam Petritsis, born and raised in Greece, after traveling extensively through the country, realized that any potential visitor to the country lacked access to a platform, which provided all the relevant information needed.
So the idea was conceived to create a website, 'Yallou' (literally for Greek for 'to somewhere else' that not only has information on the endless cities, towns, villages and islands, but also gives solutions to tourists who search or travel to Greek destinations by providing integrated, curated and quality content and contributing towards the development of sustainable destinations.
Yallou focuses on six main categories (sightseeing, activities, local producers, accommodation, food, entertainment) combined with all necessary information about a destination, including local history and culture. Yallou is a platform that gives the opportunity to locals and visitors to promote their homeland or favorite destinations in their own unique way.
Both Konstantinos and Adam share the same passion for Greece. Although that may seem biased given that it's their country, it wasn't until traveling across it that the realization dawned on them that even they discovered places they were unaware of. Despite a background and career in Economics, which he enjoyed, Konstantinos came to the solution -- one I share myself -- that life is too short not to embark on things you enjoy, hence his decision to focus entirely on creating Yallou.
Adam also explains that creating an online company was a vision he'd had for a long time despite previously being involved in the film industry.
My own approach to life has always been to do something that inspires you and both these entrepreneurs are an example of that.
Greece is typically associated, rightly so, as a summer destination with its seemingly endless summer heat. Most outsiders think of the islands -- Mykonos and Corfu come to mind. What many don't realize is that the mainland is a gateway to exploring an incredible country. From lying on the beach to skiing in one of the most mountainous countries in Europe, visiting the birthplace of the Olympic Games in Ancient Olympia to the Old Olympic stadium in Athens. Thessaloniki is known more as a 'co-capital' rather than a second city with its vibrant cultural life. The list goes on. But rather than add to it, I'll just let you visit the Yallou website. It's all there.
