Yelekal Alemu Missing: Kansas Police Puzzled By Man's Disappearance

Kansas Police Puzzled By Yelekal Alemu's Disappearance

Police in Kansas are searching for Yelekal "Kal" Alemu, a 23-year-old University of Kansas alumnus who has been missing since last week.

Alemu, of Lawrence, was last seen by friends and family on the morning of May 12. He was reported missing later that day when he failed to show up for an "important family gathering," according to Sgt. Trent McKinley, of the Lawrence Police Department.

The same evening Alemu was reported missing, authorities found his vehicle abandoned on private property in rural Douglas County, southeast of Lawrence. Authorities said the vehicle was undamaged. Investigators have yet to comment on what, if anything, was found inside the vehicle.

Lawrence police said it is out of character for Alemu to be out of touch with friends and family.

Alemu is 5-foot-10 and weighs 170 pounds. He has short hair and a full beard. He was last seen wearing a striped grey shirt.

Anyone with information on Alemu's whereabouts is asked to contact the Lawrence Police Department at 785-832-7509 or the Douglas County TIPS Hotline at 785-843-TIPS.
