Is Yoga A Sport -- Or A Spiritual Practice?

A new "yoga tax" on yoga studios in Washington D.C. has raised an important question for politicians and yogis alike: What is the definition of yoga?

The 5.75 percent sales tax extension now includes yoga studios in its definition of health clubs that operate for the main purpose of physical exercise. But many members of the yoga community disagree with this classification, saying that yoga's main objective has nothing to do with exercise.

Yoga experts Quentin Vennie, Leslie Kaminoff and Susanna Harwood Rubin joined HuffPost Live host Caroline Modarressey-Tehrani to discuss the tension between the spirituality and the physicality of the ancient mind-body practice.

"The taxing issue to me is really unfortunate," Harwood Rubin said. "You need to be really defining what yoga is if you're going to tax it ... It's slippery."

Vennie added, "I don't think any one classification will be doing the practice any justice."
