Being a leader is about more than "fitting in." You need to keep yourself motivated, and to keep yourself motivated, you need to have the right mindset-you are there because you want to do something that you will look forward to when you wake up in the morning.
For me, the goal of making the organization better gave me the legitimacy to advocate for more controversial topics. Talking frankly and putting things on the table actually positions you differently in the eyes of those with power in the company.
