Are Tween Girls Obsessed With Locker Decorations?

The New York Times reported today that locker decorations are becoming more and more popular among middle school girls:

"Swing open the door, and behold a tableau that perfectly captures the tween aesthetic. The polka-dot chandelier. The zebra-print wallpaper. The lime green shag rug that pulls the look together — without being too matchy-matchy, as a pre-tween might have it."

Critics have spoken out against the article and argued that its descriptions of what teen girls like have sexist undertones, for example: "...miniature furry carpets, motion-sensor-equipped lamps that glow when the door opens, mirrors, decorative flowers, and magnetic wallpaper in floral and leopard-print patterns."

And teens aren't just reportedly decorating their own lockers: In this Massachusetts high school, girls on the cheerleading squad decorate the lockers of athletes before big games, and this Maryland High School has a tradition of parents decorating their teens' lockers for homecoming.

So, what do you think? Are The New York Times' descriptions of tween girls' lockers accurate? Is locker-decorating an important social activity at your school? What does the inside of yours look like? Tell us in the comments.
