80 Billion Garments A Year And Nothing To Wear? (VIDEO)

WATCH: 80 Billion Garments A Year And Nothing To Wear?

How often do you open your closet and think, "I have nothing to wear"? (Answer: All the time.) But outside your bedroom doors, the world is overflowing with new clothes -- 80 billion garments per year, in fact.

That wild statistic is part of what drove Soraya Darabi and Maxine Bédat to create their new shopping site, Zady. The site, which just launched this week, is a destination for conscious consumers who want to know where all of this clothing came from, how it was made and how ethically (or unethically) it was done.

The idea, Darabi and Bédat said on HuffPost Live today, is to combat the pervasive habit of "fast fashion" and the effects it has on the market -- prices driven down as production explodes, affecting those who make the clothes in far-flung factories for tiny wages (and in high-risk environments). What we end up with is 80 billion garments made every year and still an insatiable thirst to buy more, which propels the vicious cycle of overproduction with serious environmental and human costs.

Zady's aim is to curate a collection of conscious fashion labels and present their wares with ultimate transparency, geo-tracking each item back to its roots. Check out Zady's founders explain the new project in the clip above, and head to HuffPost Live to watch the full segment.
