aunt

My Aunt Gert died on October 6, 19 days shy of her 95th birthday. Gert was a legend in her own time, propelled by looniness that was the fodder for endless jokes between myself and my kids, as well as various blog posts. Nobody who ever met Gert would forget her.
My aunt is the only family member (aside from my grandfather, who died when I was seven) who seemed to give me unconditional love. She was the one I kept in mind when the world seemed hostile.
Is there a female equivalent to avuncular -- a comfortable word to describe the goodness of aunts? We could say auntlike or tantesque -- but somehow these words seem less generous than a word like avuncular, cloaked in corduroy, describing a good-hearted, patient, indulgent uncle.
Bessie's first qualification for placement on my favorites list, therefore, was that unlike other adults she wasn't scary. Next, it was because she made the kind of sour things that I love, Kosher-style dill pickles that are hard to find unless they're homemade.
Sunday, July 26, is the seventh annual Auntie's Day, the day I founded in 2009 to celebrate and honor aunts by relation, aunts by choice to friends' children, godmothers, and all women who play an active role in the life of a child not-their-own.
And as far as the love we give to your kids goes, well, that comes naturally to us. Babies are born from the womb, but maternity comes from the soul. There are many way to be maternal. Thank you for giving us a deeply meaningful way to exercise our maternal muscle.
Since becoming a grandfather two years ago, I've really been on a roll. But nothing could top taking my granddaughter, Chloe, to Washington, D.C., for the White House Easter Egg Roll.
When I was 20, I came home from college with a broken finger. The doctor couldn't quite understand how a football caused a fracture near the knuckle of my ring finger. It made sense that he couldn't make sense of it. Because I didn't break it playing football. I broke it hitting Brad.
Your mom, before she was a mom, was the best sleeper of all. When we were younger, she'd sleep so hard and so late. I remember going into her room on weekend mornings and begging her to "wake up! wake up!"
If I had a dollar for every time someone told me that their aunt or mom's best friend 'did' weddings, I'd be able to retire. People attend weddings and don't realize how much work actually goes into making them successful.
Babies are born from the womb. Maternity is born from the soul. There are many ways to "mother" a child. Aunthood is as close as it gets.
This Father's Day, I can finally say that I am at peace with Dad. Thanks to two friends -- angels on Earth really -- one of whom, was a complete stranger who helped me let go of the unsettled business I had with pops.
"A couple of weeks ago," added Willie, who's 39. "There's anecdotal evidence that you should avoid it at all costs," added
Sometimes the most important role an aunt plays, much like Aunt Rosamund, is as a supportive sounding board.
I'm thrilled for the Prince and Princess on the birth of their royal baby boy, and I am especially happy for Pippa Middleton, Princess Catherine's sister, who has become an Auntie by Relation (ABR) today -- just in time for the 5th Annual Auntie's Day.
The moment I became an aunt for the first time was the most meaningful and fulfilling time of my life. But as much as I felt this milestone had changed everything for me, no one else beyond my closest friends and family seemed to notice. No one spoke to me as an aunt.
We'd been home four days from the hospital when the phone rang. "Hello!" an ebullient voice sang through the receiver. "It's Winnie calling to wish Sophia a happy second Thursday!"
