As a fellow survivor, I respect the courage that it takes for any survivor to speak out against sexual assault. And while I agree with Union's stance that there needs to be more discussion on what exactly constitutes "affirmative consent", I find myself troubled by her opinion piece.
The "Birth of a Nation" star says she “cannot take these allegations lightly."
On the proverbial eve of the release of the highly anticipated Birth of a Nation, it seems as if Nate Parker's once bright star is about to be extinguished, or at least dimmed by decades old rape allegations--and it should be.
The Parker controversy also casts an ugly glare on the notorious celebrity double standard. The celebrities that have found themselves plopped on the legal hot seat have a huge advantage that the average Joe couldn't even begin to dream of and would likely face long prison terms for.
Nate Parker is problematic at best, and a criminal at worst. But what are we supposed to do about it?
It won't be hard: Several will bow on Netflix or Amazon.
Nate's road to success wasn't easy. His is a victory seven years in the making; one with no guarantees, quite a few risks, and only passion, drive, and determination to see it through. Apply his lessons to your aspiration to position yourself for game-changing success
We must be bold enough to tell our own histories, even as we strive to listen more faithfully. The president reminds us, "America is not some fragile thing."
