The former U.S. Army soldier pleaded guilty to desertion after he left his post and was captured in Afghanistan and tortured by the Taliban.
A Fort Bragg military judge on Friday sentenced the U.S. soldier to a dishonorable discharge, fined him $10,000 and reduced his rank from sergeant to private.
The soldier pleaded guilty last month.
During last year’s presidential campaign, Trump called Bergdahl “a no-good traitor who should have been executed."
Bergdahl pleaded guilty on Oct. 16 to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.
He said his behavior was "inexcusable."
A military judge said Trump's slurs against the Army sergeant were "disturbing."
Trump has been very critical of Bergdahl, whose desertion court-martial is approaching
They argue that Trump's lambasting of Bergdahl compromises his right to a fair trial.
The soldier's case has been controversial.
