I can teach my boys to be safe. Safe with themselves, safe with their bodies, safe with others and their bodies. I will teach my boys that they are not entitled, that they are not owed, that they have the power to wait. To stop. To save.
Sometimes it's tentative and other times it's brazen, but at some point people almost always ask if my husband and I got pregnant on purpose.
It goes against everything we believe about motherhood, but I'd rather bury my child than leave him behind.
I used to worry about Benjamin dying, but now, 15 years in, I worry about him surviving beyond my husband and me.

I feel confident that given the chance, Sam will make it through many of life's songs, no matter how many do-overs and false starts he has to endure along the way. I wish that same confidence for my other three children. I wish it for all of us.
We're putting children in narrow boxes, cornering them into behaviors and personalities that they'll then feel that they must inhabit. We all experienced this as children in the '60s and '70s. Isn't it time we changed the course for our children?
Just like anyone, I know my son needs physical affection. The trouble is, he's a 10-year-old boy and doesn't know where to get it.
