Delayed sleep phase syndrome

This is the first genetic mutation found to be associated with delayed sleep phase disorder.
The side effects were not pleasant.
This case illustrates that sleep hygiene guidelines and non-specific treatment (general psychotherapy) are not typically effective in treating sleep disorders. Sometimes other sleep disorders such as a circadian rhythm disorder can masquerade as insomnia.
DSPS is a circadian rhythm disorder affecting the timing of the brain's sleep-wake clock. Individuals with DSPS are unable to fall asleep earlier than their usual sleep time, despite being sleep deprived from staying up the night before.
