Claire Martin departed from the newspaper last month, along with 18 other staffers who accepted a buyout offer. Martin was mostly a feature writer at The Post, and her obituaries received national acclaim. Her writing at The Post will be missed.
When I wrote five years ago that the San Jose Mercury News was in trouble, I had no idea what trouble was. The peril for the paper of Silicon Valley has certainly intensified since then.
The end may be near for one of the most widely watched experiments in local journalism. But for someone who has been watching the Digital First story play out in New Haven for the past five years, what happened today was more a disappointment than a surprise.
