Science is not a commercial thing. Science is a communal, cooperative enterprise in which information, knowledge, data, and ideas are shared openly and broadly. Any entity that puts commercial interests ahead of this shared enterprise, such as Elsevier, needs to get its priorities straight.
One system being developed is the Selected-Papers Network ("SP net"), a sort of Pinterest for peer-review in which researchers with common interests across the sciences can subscribe to one another to share 'must-read' articles and reviews.
