Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, was arrested in connection with the string of crimes on Tuesday.
"For over 40 years, helpless victims have waited for justice," a district attorney said.
The man is suspected of 12 slayings and 45 rapes in California, in a 40-year-old cold case.
