Districts are still unconscionably underfunded when it comes to school food, and Big Food still plays too large of a lobbying role in shaping what appears on kids' trays.
The new rule includes provisions that will also regulate all foods sold in schools, including in vending machines. This announcement may just move The First Lady's goal of reducing obesity in a generation a step closer to reality.
Making school meals universally available and free for every child would not only offer a great moral good but would also offer a very smart, economical and efficient investment.
While the resulting stuffed turkey that is the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids' Act, is not perfect, it's pretty darn good.
