heather cassils

Artist Cassils uses their unclothed body to explore realities of violence, oppression and trauma.
I aim to make images that bash through binaries and the notion that in order to be officially transgender, you have to have surgery or take hormones. I perform trans not as something about a crossing from one sex to another but as a continual becoming.
This project is about gender and its signifiers. I built my body to its maximum capacity over 23 weeks. I did this to explore the social expectations of what a "woman's" body could be pushed to.
