I'm all for films, as Jafar Panahi says in his latest Taxi, showing here in Berlinale: "All films are worth watching; it just depends on your taste." But perhaps I wish, deep down inside, as a human being, that our collective taste was just more about peace and love. Without so much blood, so many guns.
I am the first to be convinced that globalization is no panacea. I have said, and will say again, the situation it has created calls for new regulations.
It is greatly worthwhile to celebrate the notable movies of 2011 that took the risk of advocating for democratic freedom, the political principle that makes so much film artistry possible.
In cinematic circles, it is said that the Toronto International Film Festival is second only to Cannes. But in terms of numbers of films presented, industry connections and stars attending, I would say it's too close to call.
