Oscar winner, Lupita Nyong’o is no stranger to talking about the racist remarks she receives about her hair.

I have to remind my daughter that length and/or texture does not determine whether or not someone is pretty. It's just one aspect of that person. But I have to admit, it's sometimes challenging to convince a child that length isn't important when society is so focused on it.

It's hard to put into words the significance a woman's hair often symbolizes in her life. I've always understood this. However, I think I understood it most four months ago when I held the scissors to my head and cut my hair to expose my natural texture for the first time in my adult life.
