I think that remembering, when we remember our dead today, is an active verb. Our remembering today is a vocal and a vigorous act of naming a people and describing a hate that is not pretty, or comfortable, or nostalgic.
CeCe McDonald's experience seems to show that being caught in the wrong place at the wrong time can somehow turn someone who very much appears to be a black, transgender victim and survivor of a hate crime into a criminal.
