He’s good enough for me because he’s mine. Not because of a sport he feels like he’s got to perform in to earn my love.

I don't mind that innings start late because kids are waving to their parents in the stands and asking for "just one more bite" of their granola bar through the chain-link fence. I don't mind the chaos, the confusion or the constant chatter. It's all part of the tee-ball game and as coach, I wouldn't have it any other way.
Religion
Since all the political news is terrible and only getting worse, I decided to reflect on something very personal this week -- about a great event that happened this weekend.

I thought I'd share the experience of managing three kids and a Little League game on a school night, for those of you unfamiliar with it.

Perhaps it is no accident that a baseball has 108 stitches and a prayer necklace has 108 beads. Baseball does not discriminate and we do not have to believe in the same God to be on the same team. It is a game of courage, strength, and character that can bring grown men to cry.

Baseball requires a different level of discipline than other sports. Baseball combines athleticism and brain power. Baseball matters because it has shaped our culture and our kids for decades. It is a part of our history.

Off in the distance, I watched with idle interest as the batter smacked the ball. The kid had power, and sent it sailing across the expanse of the field. One of the opposing players moved in for the catch, an easy, fluid gesture that for some inexplicable reason brought me to tears.

Parents, your kids will be fine if they don't start -- as long as you're fine! For the first time my son didn't start today, and I couldn't have been prouder. He was the only one on the bench standing and cheering for his teammates.
Sports
Stotz is known as the "Father of Little League Baseball," a program that has transcended all borders, races, languages and backgrounds to bring boys and girls together on ballfields to play both baseball and softball worldwide.

I lived through high school once and while it was fun for me, I'm definitely not interested in reliving those years -- especially as an adult. But after another few games in, I decided to sell my soul to the devil and became one of those annoying people. I guess if you can't beat them -- join them.

Youth sports are being hijacked. Let's put it more directly -- your sports are being hijacked. The sports that your kids play are being taken over by a well-intentioned but misguided and counterproductive drive to make them better athletes in the hopes of attaining glory at "the next level" -- college, pro, the World Cup, etc.

Congratulations, motivated, ambivalent or perhaps conscripted young baseball participant! You (and hopefully not your impossible nightmareparents) are invited to join the planet's least selective, low-expectation and most emotionally balanced youth sports team: The Zen Cubs.

If you have ever thought about the impact that volunteer coaches have on your son or daughter, then you'll really like this next story. I was giving a talk to a group of youth sports administrators about the importance of coaches in their program being a positive influence.
