Little Jimmy was a God-loving man, but also a lover of people and good times. He loved Coney Island and the July 4th contest where he and I could celebrate America, and then stroll post-contest to Ruby's on the boardwalk.
While the lives of dwarfs may often be typical, dwarfism is not, occurring at a rate of one in every 10,000 births. Because it is rare, the diagnosis can be a surprise to new parents not expecting a dwarf child. But resources are available.
I struggled day in and day out to find fashion for little people. I would see clothes for the big and tall but nothing for the little or small. Then I said to myself "God, if I am struggling this way and I am sure all the little people struggling like this too?!"

Though as a society we claim to value difference, in reality we fear it, keep it at a distance and would stamp it out if given the opportunity. And with genetic testing becoming increasingly cheap and ubiquitous, the day of opportunity is not far off.
December 3 is recognized around the world as International Day of People with Disabilities. While the anniversary typically doesn't cultivate much attention in the United States, this year the Senate has the opportunity to underscore the importance of rights for people with disabilities worldwide.
Though we celebrate who we are as a community, we want to be judged according to our skills, our character, and our experience, not according to something over which we have no control, our stature. The more we raise awareness about dwarfism, the closer we will come to this goal.
