For the most part, Eddie Huang's show has been hailed by Asian American boosters as a smashing success. White guys who wear track suits stand behind it. Asian guys who aspire to a certain kind of edginess dig its groovy hip hop stylings and in-your-face-stick-it-to-the-man street vernacular. But I actually found it a depressing show.
Thirty years ago! Scary! Yet inspiring. (Certainly most millennials I encounter are ripping off that era as fast as their iPad-laden hands can grab.) For your pleasure and edification, I was there (and then), and I reflect.
21 & Over isn't high art, but it delivers, and I can't help but feel heartened that it seems to recognize that young audiences today would rather see racial stereotypes skewered instead of perpetuated.
