I just finished my first seven-day silent retreat. That means I didn't speak for seven days. Can you imagine? Not a word. It was difficult, for sure, but I was not alone. There were over 40 other people there, too, spending the week in complete silence.
This process doesn't have a clear end, it's ongoing. If you have any draw to the practice, move toward it. You can start by simply starting to pay attention to what's happening in any given moment. Even if you feel skeptical, you know on an intuitive level -- bitter does not age well.
I hope that you are inspired enough to give meditation a chance as you deserve greater peace in your life. For those that already meditate, and will now try it at work, I am confident your boss and colleagues will appreciate the new super-hero at the office.
You see, mindfulness isn't about perfection or reaching some artificial standard. It starts -- and continues -- with the simple daily decision that you want to become aware of what's really going on in you and in your life.
For now, depression is still a part of who I am. I am not ashamed of this and while I do not welcome it, I cannot pretend that it is not there. Maybe the phrase should be adjusted for meaning. Instead of, I am not my illness, perhaps it should be, there is more to me than my illness.
We have to ask ourselves, would we hand drugs to our kids? Would we provide them with a chronic dependency that rules their lives? No, we wouldn't. So why do we continue to hand them stressful lives with a shrug of our shoulders, and a blasé acceptance that it's 'just the way it is'?
