Maria Montessori Academy in North Ogden experienced a public backlash after announcing plans to make participation optional.
"I hope we all remember that we have far more as Americans that unites us than divides us," North Ogden Mayor Brent Taylor wrote.
Brent Taylor, mayor of North Ogden, reportedly died on Saturday while serving with Utah's National Guard.
