Bob Weighton lived through the 1918 flu and two world wars, but said nothing in his 11-plus decades prepared him for life in the coronavirus era.
Watanabe, of Niigata, Japan, was awarded the honor after the death of fellow Japanese citizen Masazo Nonaka, who was 112 years and 266 days old.
His secret to longevity: "Chew your food well before swallowing."
And he's a 112-year-old Holocaust survivor.
